Gamblin Cold Wax Medium is a mixture of natural beeswax, Gamsol odorless mineral spirit, and a small amount of alkyd resin. The term “cold” in Cold Wax Medium and Cold Wax Painting refers to the fact that heat is not required for working with this wax medium – as it dries by solvent evaporation (Gamsol), rather than the cooling of the wax, as in encaustic painting. The Gamsol evaporates out of the medium and polymerizes with the fatty acids in oil paints to form a durable, matte surface.

The 6″ Squeegee is good for basic techniques on a variety of different paintings.
This is the knife we use. The flat tip and sides allow for a good paint load, fast mixing, and controlled scraping without gouging. The blade and shank are one solid piece. Unlike the cheaper, welded ones, we’ve never had one break.

Rebecca Crowell is an American abstract artist known for rich, complex surfaces created with cold wax medium and oil paint. Her work is included in hundreds of art collections–private, public, and corporate–and she exhibits regularly in fine art galleries across the country.
Jerry McLaughlin is an abstract artist best known for his minimalist, textured, geometric paintings. His work considers the interplay between beauty and darkness while simultaneously exploring the materiality of cold wax medium. He initially trained as a Pediatric Critical Care physician, an influence still palpable. He lives and paints in Mexico.
